5 Must Have Baby Shower Gifts

Your friend is expecting a baby – YAY! And she’s having a baby shower – YAY! ….But you don’t know what gift to buy because looking around at her shower list you see gadgets and gizmos a-plenty. You see whozits and whatzits galore. She didn’t put thingamabobs – but she’ll get twenty.

It’s okay.

No big deal.

Look no more.

There are really only a handful of things new parents really need (sleep, coffee, food) – we don’t sell those.

But we do have the 101 – the down low, if you will – on the most helpful, beloved new baby gifts that are tried, tested, and truly loved by fellow parents (and babies alike).

Best Baby Shower Gift Ideas

Teethers

Teething toys are some of our favourite new baby gifts! Why? Well, teething is hard on both parents and baby – and every baby goes through it (this is when your friend will need some coffee). The good news? Teething toys can provide relief! New and exciting teething toys can distract from the pain and even alleviate pain for babies. Teethers come in all shapes and sizes, and some are even dual purpose! These are the ones we love:

Rattles and Clutch Toys

Shake, shake, shake. Shake, shake, shake. Shake your groove thang. Non-parents may not understand this – but the first time your baby picks up a rattle and shakes - it's a BIG DEAL.

Heck, anytime your baby does anything for the first time is a big deal.

But there’s something extra special about when your baby starts to play – for both the parent and the baby. For one, the baby can officially start keeping themselves entertained! And two: baby and parents can interact in a new way together. It’s very rewarding.

Soft Books & Touchy-Feely Sensory Books

Babies love colours and discover different textures. Sensory books for babies are a treat for little ones and a wonderful new baby gift. Sensory books give an opportunity for baby to explore fabric textures with fingers, admire bright colours, and in general work on hand-eye coordination. It’s such a fun way for kids to explore touch! Another wonderful benefit: it brings baby and parents closer. Reading aloud is a wonderful shared activity for years to come.

Lovies & Stuffed Animals (to match any baby shower theme)

If you want to be remembered eighteen years from now – get the lovie. Lovies and stuffed animals are the perfect new baby gift for one reason and one reason only: it will become the baby’s FAVOURITE item for years to come.

Baby’s (….and some adults who would like to remain anonymous) form a very close attachment to their lovie. It’s something that will bring them comfort in the middle of the night or as they begin to explore the big world around them. However – if you choose to get a lovie or stuffie, always get TWO...(unless you want to join a middle-of-the-night search party three years from now).

Swaddle Blankets

Here’s the truth: you can never have too many swaddle blankets. They make the perfect baby shower gift, gender reveal present or gift for meeting a new baby. Swaddle blankets come in so many colours, patterns, and themes that they can be matched to any shower theme or nursery décor.

Swaddling mimics the security of the womb and helps limit the baby’s startle reflex (that jerky movement of the arms and legs, common in the first five months of life). Swaddling babies is common practice. But not all swaddling blankets are created equal. We LOVE cotton muslin swaddle blankets (and parents do, too). It's perfect for letting a baby's body temperature stay regulated while swaddling. The weave also allows for a little bit of stretch, and the fabric gets softer and softer with every wash.

And if you need any further convincing for gifting a swaddle: you can be the reason your friend’s baby looks like a burrito!
