Fidgets: Are They Tools or Toys?

Fidgets: Are They Tools or Toys?

Fidget toys are manipulatives designed to reduce restlessness and help kids focus. Fidgets include spinners and fidget cubes, squishy balls, fuzzy rings, tangle puzzles, putty and many more.

Spinners and push pop fidget devices were initially billed as tools for kids with attention or sensory challenges, such as those diagnosed with ADHD and autism. They were designed as a therapeutic outlet, to help calm anxious kids and provide aid in their need to be constantly moving. Fidget tools can help kids with sensory processing disorders tune out other sensory stimuli and focus. They may also help with their breathing and calming nerves, especially for children who are highly anxious.

What Do You Do With a Wobble Board?

Am I the only one to wonder why I didn't have such cool open ended toys when I was a kid? A wobble board (or balance board as they are also called) is simply a piece of curved wood that rocks back and forth. At first glance, it seems a very simple gross motor toy, kids can stand in the middle of the board, one foot on either curved end and wobble back and forth. But wobble boards have so many more creative uses.

Wobble boards are the ultimate open ended toy. Open-ended toys are toys that are unplugged and don’t come with a set of specific instructions; what to do with them is up to the imagination of your kids.

Thanksgiving Books for Kids

Ah, Thanksgiving. When it comes to the typical fall aesthetic, Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to celebrate with your family. The scent of apple and pumpkin pie, a turkey roasting in the oven, the leaves falling lightly from the trees… and of course, a mug of sweet-smelling cider tucked into your fist. Aside from this, there is an endless amount of autumn activities to do with your kids; cooking and baking, apple and pumpkin picking, or the best yet; snuggling up with a cozy blanket and a good book. Reading is of course, one of our favourite fall activities. In this article, we will share some of our favourite books to read with kids in October.

Why Wooden Toys?

Why Wooden Toys?

Why have wood toys grown so popular, especially considering the amount of high-tech plastic and electronic toys available today? This is a very common inquiry among parents. If you've visited our Burlington toy store, you may have noticed we have far more wooden toys than plastic.

Wood toys are commonly associated with Montessori toys. If you've ever seen a Montessori classroom, you may have noticed that most of the toys are made of wood. Montessori is a type of education that focuses more on natural interests rather than the structured systems of education. Montessori toys stimulate the senses and encourage learning through trial and error.

There are many reasons we love wooden toys:

Our Favourite Farm Themed Toys for Toddlers

From the three little pigs to Old MacDonald's farm, there is surely no shortage of the farm-animal theme among young kids. Although most kids don’t typically see live farm animals often, they are a constant image in books, toys, and songs for the first few years of a child’s life.

Why exactly are farm themed toys for kids so popular? Similar to other animals that are not found in cities, such as ones found in jungles, the arctic, or the ocean, farm animals are a great way to introduce your child to the world that exists outside of their backyard. It’s an opportunity to teach them about how other people in the world live, which allows them to exercise their imagination and ask questions. You can also explain to them the importance of farm animals and the roles they play in our lives; such as providing us with the milk we drink and the eggs we eat.
