What Do You Do With a Wobble Board?

Am I the only one to wonder why I didn't have such cool open ended toys when I was a kid? A wobble board (or balance board as they are also called) is simply a piece of curved wood that rocks back and forth. At first glance, it seems a very simple gross motor toy, kids can stand in the middle of the board, one foot on either curved end and wobble back and forth. But wobble boards have so many more creative uses.

Wobble boards are the ultimate open ended toy. Open-ended toys are toys that are unplugged and don’t come with a set of specific instructions; what to do with them is up to the imagination of your kids.

Made from veneered beech wood and water-based lacquer, the wobble board can be turned with the semi-circle up (like a smile), or with it facing down (taking the shape of a frown). It’s a sleek, good-quality wooden board that is not only a great toy for kids, but overall a very useful object for all kinds of play.

Gross Motor Play

When it comes to indoor activities, the wobble board is often used as a see-saw or a balance beam. Kids can lay down on it like a cradle as you rock them back-and-forth. It’s a fun way to give them the feeling of being in a “park” in their own living room. Another popular activity is to use it as a slide! You can put it up against the couch and watch your kids slide down it, or put it between two pieces of furniture to create a bridge!

Open Ended Play

Balance boards are an incredible toy to combine with other toys. You can use it as a crafle for dolls, a race track for toy cars, a stand for a puppet show, or a reading nook for books or homework.

Household Object

While the wobble board is a great toy, it is also a very useful object to have around the house.  Use it as a tray or a table for breakfast in bed, or lunch on the couch in front of the tv! It can also be used as a desk to draw and color on while sitting on the floor, or as a stool for kids to reach up to the sink or counter.

Finally, one of the best features of the wobble board is the room it makes for collaboration. If you have more than one child, or if your kid has a playdate, it’s a great way for your kids to create a game both inside and outside, and encourages teamwork. They can take turns rocking each other back and forth, or put them each on either end, like a see-saw. Whatever you choose, it’s likely that the wobble board will become even more enjoyable to your kids when they are playing together - and makes them more likely to get along!

We hope this article about the wobble board has inspired both your and your kiddos to get creative!
